How it works

Three steps. Then just press play.

No account to create, no cloud, no subscription. HOMEFLIX runs quietly on your computer and your other screens open it like a website.

Install and pick your folder

Download HOMEFLIX for Windows, Mac or Linux, install it and choose the folder where your movies are. Sub-folders are included.

Scan the code

On your phone, iPad or TV, connect to the same Wi-Fi and scan the QR code HOMEFLIX shows, or type its address into the browser.

Watch

Browse your films and shows like on Netflix and press play. Each device remembers where you stopped.

Features

Feels like streaming. Plays from your computer.

HOMEFLIX handles the awkward parts, like file formats, languages and quiet soundtracks, so every device just plays.

A home screen you already know

Big banner, rows of titles, Continue Watching, series grouped by season with the next episode playing on its own.

Plays MKV and almost anything

MKV, MP4, AVI and more. Files a device can't play directly are converted on the fly (on Windows, using the PC's graphics chip when it can).

Audio languages and subtitles

Switch between Tamil, Hindi, English or whatever the file carries, mid-movie. Subtitles from the file or a .srt next to it.

Volume boost

Films mixed quietly for cinemas get a one-tap boost on phones and TVs, about twice as loud, without distortion.

Made for the remote too

On a smart TV, move around with the arrows and OK, and pause, skip and pick subtitles from on-screen controls.

Private by design

Works only inside your own network: connections from the internet are turned away. Add an optional PIN so only your devices get in. No tracking, nothing uploaded.

Every screen

If it has a browser, it plays.

Nothing to install on your other devices. Open the address once and add it to the home screen for an app icon.

iPhone

Safari, with Add to Home Screen.

iPad

Big-screen browsing, AirPlay to a TV.

Android

Chrome, installable as an app.

Smart TV

Samsung, LG, Android TV and Fire TV browsers.

Download

Free for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Install it on the computer that has your movies. Your phone, iPad and TV need nothing installed.

Windows

Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. Everything it needs is included.

Installing on a Mac
  1. Drag HOMEFLIX to ApplicationsOpen the downloaded .dmg and drag the HOMEFLIX icon onto Applications.
  2. Open it the first timeOpen HOMEFLIX from Applications. If macOS says it can't verify it, click Done, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. Only needed once.

Around the world

Movie nights around the world.

Every square is a piece of the world. The more people who downloaded HOMEFLIX there, the redder it gets.

Downloads are counted once per browser, by country only. No IP addresses or personal details are stored.
Questions

Good to know.

Is it really free?

Yes. There's no subscription, no account and no ads. HOMEFLIX is open source on GitHub.

Does it upload my movies anywhere?

No. Your computer streams straight to your devices over your own Wi-Fi. Nothing goes to the internet, and there's no tracking. Devices connecting from the internet are turned away, even if your router forwards the port.

Can I stop others on my Wi-Fi from watching?

Yes. Turn on Require a PIN in HOMEFLIX's settings and choose 4 to 8 digits. Each phone, tablet or TV asks for it once, then remembers it. Change the PIN and every device has to enter the new one. After 5 wrong tries, HOMEFLIX makes people wait before trying again.

Can I watch when I'm away from home?

No. HOMEFLIX only works inside your home network. That's what keeps it simple and private.

What do I need?

A Windows 10/11 PC, a Mac (macOS 12 or later) or a Linux computer with your movies on it, and your devices on the same Wi-Fi. Keep the computer awake and plugged in while you watch. The movie plays on your phone or TV, not on the computer.

Which file formats work?

MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WebM, TS and more, including HEVC (x265). If a device can't play a file directly, HOMEFLIX converts it as it plays. Subtitles inside the file, or a .srt or .vtt file next to it, show up in the player.

Does it work on Mac or Linux?

Yes. There are versions for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs (macOS 12 or later), and for Linux as a .deb (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint) or an AppImage that runs on most distros, on 64-bit PCs and ARM computers like the Raspberry Pi 4/5. The devices you watch on can be anything with a modern browser.

Why does my computer warn me when I install it?

Windows and macOS warn about apps that haven't paid for a code-signing certificate. On Windows click More info → Run anyway. On a Mac open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. Both are only needed the first time.
